Overwatch Festival (OWFestZA) 15 and 19 Feb Results

African Cyber Gaming League (ACGL) Overwatch Festival (OWFestZA)

15 and 19 February 2017 | 1v1 Mystery Duel Results

On the 9th of January 2017 the African Cyber Gaming League announced its inaugural Overwatch tournament, dubbed the Overwatch Festival (OWFestZA). The event stretches across five individual single elimination tournament styled events on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players can take part in both 1v1 Mystery Duels (set for 15 and 19 February, and 1 March) and 3v3 Elimination modes (22 and 26 February).

Players earn cumulative experience (XP) based on their performances for each tournament, with the top players with the most cumulative experience at the end of the entire event earning awesome prizes. The tournaments are all absolutely free to enter. You can read the ACGL OWFestZA announcement article here.

The tournament format for these first two tournaments is the standard single elimination best of one (Bo1) match ups where two players face off in a match, with randomly assigned heroes. A Bo1 is complete when one of the players is the first to win 5 rounds within the match. To put that into perspective, a 5 – 4 Bo1 would see players face off in nine rounds of combat before a victor is declared. These mystery duels are mirror match ups, which means that both players are randomly assigned the same heroes in each round (i.e. Genji vs Genji, or Hanzo vs Hanzo).

Each tournament thus has a single victor, a runner up, 3/4th place, et cetera where XP values are assigned for your final placement. This means that if win one of these events you walk away with a huge 250XP, but if you were eliminated in Round 1 you’d only bag 50XP. The goal? To accrue as much XP as possible over the entire event.

In this tournament, players will need to create a new clan consisting of exactly 3 players in order to take part. With a massive 750XP up for grabs for the winners on each platform, this is a great chance for players to jump positions on the ACGL leaderboard.

As we understand that many of you might only solo queue Overwatch (or you simply don’t have friends who are interested) we’ve set up some recruitment channels on our Discord server. If you are looking for a team, or you’re looking for players for your team, feel free to head over to the ACGL Discord server to meet with others who are currently free agents. There is a channel for each platform, so make sure you head over and grab some potential teammates.

Remember, prizes for the overall winners (1st – 3rd place) of the entire OWFestZA event on each of the platforms includes: R1 000 cash, Overwatch Collector’s Edition, SteelSeries Rival 300 Mouse, SteelSeries Siberia 200 Gaming Headset, Overwatch Recruitment Kit, Overwatch themed mouse pads, reflex warmers, and more. For a detail break down make sure you head over to the OWFestZA announcement article (we linked it above). And, most importantly, entry is absolutely free! So grab a few mates and come play some competitive Overwatch.

The final tournament dates for the 2017 OWFestZA are:

22 February 2017: 3v3 Elimination

26 February 2017: 3v3 Elimination

01 March 2017: 1v1 Mystery Duel

Our sponsors had this to say about the Overwatch Festival:

“MWEB GameZone is excited to be part of the Overwatch Festival with ACGL. We are positive that this event will contribute to growing the Overwatch and gaming community, in South Africa. We look forward to more Overwatch events, like this, in the near future” –

Derrick Kaylor Product Manager of New Services at MWEB GameZone.

“eSport in South Africa is hungry for development in all genres. The 1v1 and 3v3 concept in Overwatch helps involve those players not yet part of a full team and gives them a taste of the competitive field in South Africa. With this in mind, we felt it was a great concept to get involved with alongside ACGL again and in an active tournament that has a fresh and new dynamic for the community.” – SteelSeries and KontrolFreek Brand Manager for Megarom Interactive.
